Located in the center of Ottawa’s Preston Street community, the Plant Recreation Centre is likely the most recognized of all City of Ottawa operated fitness facilities. Lundy performed extensive renovations to the original heritage building, gutting and repurposing it while adding a state of the art natatorium, grand entrance, and fitness area. Much of the 1920’s era original brick masonry was restored and incorporated into the stunning architecture.
The addition included the pre-assembly and erection of a massive Triodetic space frame, more than half a football field in size, over the new Olympic-sized swimming pool. It was first assembled in the adjacent soccer field before being hoisted into place in one piece. The space frame is Canada’s largest multi-directional, variable depth, segmented tubular steel frame designed for an asymmetrical snow load.
